What is a Holistic Medical Approach?

Holistic medicine takes into account your whole body and how it works together. A holistic approach recognizes that your lifestyle and environment impact your physical health, which also affects your mental health. It considers the causes of diseases and not just a condition alone. Treatment often includes changes to a combination of bodily systems and causes rather than just one affected area.



Why is it Important?

A holistic medicine approach is important because you are a unique individual. Not every issue has the same cause for everyone, so not all treatment should look the same. For example, a fraction of women with anemia are iron deficient. But in contemporary medicine, the treatment for anemia is iron supplementation. This treatment, then, misses a significant amount of women who have another cause. You should be getting health care that is as unique as you are!



What is a Holistic Mental Health Approach?

A holistic mental health approach considers the many different potential causes for the mental health systems you may be experiencing. These may include physical symptoms such as inflammation, nutritional aspects such as vitamin deficiency, hormonal imbalances such as estrogen dominance, social elements such as a lack of support, or previous traumas. These are just a handful of the many factors that may be contributing to your mental health symptoms. A holistic approach investigates all potential causes rather than assuming traditionally seen causes.


When many potential causes are investigated, the root cause can be discovered and treated, and therefore mental health symptoms can be treated more thoroughly. This approach is not necessarily shared among mental health professionals. If you are interested in a holistic approach for your mental health treatment, look for a provider who aligns with a holistic theory and additional education to inform their work.



How is this Incorporated into Perinatal Mental Health?

Prenatal and postpartum is a unique time that I would argue, requires a holistic approach. Changes occur in your body (nutritionally, hormonally, wound healing), your brain (structural changes), socially (role and family changes, added responsibilities), and relationally (a new parental role for you and your partner). These and other changes all have a significant impact on your mental health, and they all need to be discussed and addressed. This is done with you, a mental health therapist, and your whole care team in collaboration.


In my practice, I work with women and couples to prepare for an easier transition during postpartum and parenthood. I also utilize a holistic mental health approach when treating postpartum depression and anxiety. This is incredibly important to me as I know this is the type of treatment that is most effective for my clients.
